ACRL Distance Learning Section Instruction Committee Minutes of the Meeting ALA 2002 Midwinter Conference Sunday, January 20, 2002
Members present: Michele Reid, chair, Meredith Ault, Patrick Mahoney, and Robin Lockerby.
Guest: Sharon Elteto.
Introductions:
- Group introductions were made.
Old Business
- Best Practices List was discussed at ALA, San Francisco and passed on to the Web Committee, who will soon post it on the Web site.
- "Evaluating Web-based LI" will also be posted soon.
- Committee's program suggestions were conveyed to the 2003 Conference Planning Committee Chair, who thanked us for our ideas on behalf of his committee. The Conference topic will be "Collaboration and Marketing with Teaching Faculty."
- DLS Vision Statement, approved by the Executive Board, was circulated. Michele will send email with the full text to the committee. We will look at the Instruction Committee statement to see if we need to rewrite our current statement to make sure that it is consistent with the section statement.
Response DEADLINE: February 7, 2002
New Business
- Future projects for the committee were discussed. Four major ideas were distilled into two themes:
- Assessment Guidelines/Models -- Patrick and Robin will conduct a preliminary review and share results with the committee. Committee will then decide if we want to proceed and assign topics for further development.
Review DEADLINE: March 11, 2002
- Fact Sheet on Types of Instruction done by Distance Learning Librarians -- Meredith and Sharon will conduct a preliminary review of web-based distance learning (overview of types of instruction being used by DE Librarians with pros and cons of each). Their results will be shared with the committee to decide if we want to proceed and assign topics for further development.
Review DEADLINE: March 11, 2002
- If approved by committee, drafts will be completed by ALA.
- Briefly discussed the possibility of giving DLS Awards or a Seal of Approval for Best Instruction Practices.
