DLS 2003 Program Ideas:
Major discussion focused on distance education instructional topics that could be forwarded to the 2003 DLS Program Committee for consideration. Chair is Betty Ronayne, California State University-Sacramento (bronayne@csus.edu). Michele will forward this information on behalf of this committee.

Best practices that are identified in the literature and web-sites we’ve identified illustrating faculty collaboration or assessment should be played out. The use of appropriate instructional design and pedagogy should be incorporated in the delivery as well as noted in an annotated bibliography for the program.

Carole cited University of Central Florida’s collaborative program with their faculty. Deb Gilchrist was suggested as a presenter re: assessment. Joan Lippincott’s name was also mentioned as a presenter.

Guest Remarks:
Jack requested that the Committee forward materials for the DLS web page to Beth Reiten. (This will include the handouts listed above, committee minutes, and roster.)

It was suggested that the web page provide links to the Instruction Section and LIRT pages. Lisa introduced herself as the liaison from the Instruction Section.

DLS 2002 Program:
The tentative title is “The Questia Question: Value Added or Virtually Redundant? The committee made suggestions for making the program more inclusive. Michele will convey these comments to the 2002 Committee.

Other Discussion Items:

  • Web tutorials for remote/onsite users.
  • Difference between distributed learning and distance education.
  • Courseware programs (BlackBoard, WebCT) with third party vendors (XanEdu, Ebsco, etc.)
  • PR Marketing, personalizing services through ‘human beings.’
  • Real time instruction (LSSI, Q and A Café, etc.)

It was suggested that someone in the DLS Section needs to monitor appropriate legislation on copyright and disseminate that information in the Section.

A general DLS membership meeting followed, from 10:30-11:00am.
