Fields
A
field is the part of a record in a database housing a special type of
information.
For
example, the TITLE field
contains TITLE information for a work.
The
SUBJECT field contains
the SUBJECT HEADING of a work.
Each field can be used to search a particular part of the record. For example, when you perform an AUTHOR search you are telling the database to search only in the author field.
