Subject Heading

A subject heading (or descriptor) is a standardized term or phrase assigned to a book, video, etc. to describe what the item is about.

Usually more than one subject heading is assigned to a library item. Subject headings are placed in a catalog or database record to help organize the records and allow them to be searched by a user.

Often subject headings include a subdivision to specify a geographical area or time period.
