ACRL Distance Learning Section Membership Committee Meeting Minutes 14 January 2001

Present: Ewa Barczyk, Chair, Nicole Campbell, Doug Carroll, Monica Craig, Karen Diller, Marie Jones, Carole Kabel, Bonnie Ryan

It was decided that Ewa and Karen would take DLS brochures and stickers to the ACRL conference in Denver in March.

Discussion of the website
The committee discussed the DLS website. Everyone felt that the site was positive, clear and easy to read. The "Who We Are" section is dated and needs to be revised and linked to the mission statement. The links to the current newsletter also need to be updated. The "Join Us" section doesn't provide enough information about activities or a contact person. Information from the section brochure could be duplicated on the web site. Ewa will pass the comments to the Web Committee and Nicole Campbell, the Web site liaison.

Ewa received mailing labels for new DLS members from ACRL. Karen will work on a welcome letter (see attachment). Ewa will send the letter to the new members.

ACRL Funding/Summer ALA Welcoming Reception
ACRL has money to distribute to sections that support the ACRL strategic plan, (possibly $1500.) We will investigate if this money could be used for the section breakfast welcoming new/perspective members at the San Francisco Discussion Group Meeting. Ewa is trying to contact Mari Miller, the incoming chair of the Discussion as well as a contact at Berkley to ask if the breakfast meeting could be held off-site at a distance learning facility. The committee is also asked to investigate the possibility of requesting that a library vendor such as Net-Library fund the breakfast. We are planning for 100-150 participants at the cost of one to two thousand dollars. We need to make a final decision by the end of February.

Response to ACRL ULS
The committee answered a questionnaire from the University Libraries Section Communication Committee on how our section communicates. They are attempting to revise how their section communicates.

When DLS members attend other conferences, Karen can provide DLS brochures for distribution at the conferences.
