ACRL Distance
Learning Section Membership Committee Meeting Minutes 26 January 2003
Attending: Ewa Barczyk,
Chair, Jae Fisher, Monica Craig, Page Brannon, Carole Kabel, Jeanne Voyles
The membership terms of Page,
Monica, Bonnie, Carole and Beth are expiring June 2003. Kathe Conley provided
ACRL Membership forms for renewals.
DLS Brochure Update
We have been funded by ACRL for the new brochure. ACRL also has a graphic
designer that we may be able to use.
It was agreed that we should add the "established/start date"
of the section on the front of the brochure. We will keep the names and
dates of the DLS Programs on the brochure. The color will remain beige,
but Ewa will ask the graphic designer to enhance the DLS logo.
Anne Casey shared a welcome
letter and certificate that she received from LAMA.
Discussion took place about what should be included in the letter as well
as the costs involved. Ewa stated that ACRL will begin to provide email
addresses of new DLS members. As a result we can email the DLS welcome
letter with a link to the electronic version of the DLS newsletter. The
letter should also include instructions on how to subscribe to OFFCAMP.
Learning Partners Initiative
The DLS Executive Committee is considering adopting a mentoring program
to serve the members of DLS. This would be a great recruiting tool. A
cover letter or brochure with the name of contact person should be created
and given to ALA.
Nicole Campbell, a representative
of the Web Committee asked if there were any concerns. The Committee suggested
asking DLS members to create a link to the DLS web site from their home
institution web pages.
ACRL has reported that membership
has declined. However for the time period Nov. 2001-November 2002, DLS
had a growth of +1 %.
ACRL Membership Report
Ewa shared the ACRL Membership report. ACRL wants to make sure that they
are reaching all sections with more electronic sources, web-casting and
recruiting of the next generation. Less than ½ of the Academic
Librarians surveyed are members of ACRL. ACRL plans to set up chapters
in library schools. DLS could piggyback on that with the Learning Partners
Initiative.
